Before Formula 1 travels to Monaco at the end of May, it is the turn of Formula E. The ePrix of Monaco was ultimately a prey to Stoffel Vandoorne. Mitch Evans and Jean-Eric Vergne are the other podium finishers.

Many changes to the lead

Earlier on Saturday, Evans managed to score pole position. The New Zealander managed to hold on to the lead after the start with former F1 drivers Pascal Wehrlein and Vergne on his heels. De Vries and Frijns did not manage to impress at the start and remained stuck in seventh and eighth place.

It took ten minutes of waiting, but then it was Daniel Ticktum who was the first to deploy his attack mode. However, he would not play a significant role in the ePrix of Monaco, as the Briton drove around the back of the midfield. Not much later, a number of drivers driving more upfront also followed suit. Robin Frijns, Antonio Felix da Costa and Oliver Rowland grab their first attack mode early in the race.

Almost halfway through the race, Evans lost the lead as he deployed his first attack mode. Wehrlein took over the lead and Vergne also passed Evans. The New Zealander overtook Wehrlein again when the German went for his first attack mode, which put Vergne in the lead.

Porsche in trouble

Wehrlein did not have to give up the lead for long, however, as the Porsche driver used his attack mode well. He overtook both Vergne and Evans again and tried to use attack mode to increase the lead from there. At the moment when Wehrlein seemed to have everything under control, the German got into trouble. The Porsche reduced its speed and it dropped back to last place. Eventually, it lead to a retirement and Vergne got the lead in his lap. Wehrlein's stalled car also caused a full course yellow.

For Porsche, things went from bad to worse. After Wehrlein's retirement, André Lotterer also crashed out in the first corner. Rowland also crashed out. This causes a short safety car period.

Final phase of the race

In the final minutes after the safety car, the race became exciting. Vandoorne moved into the lead of the race, while Frijns had found his way to the front. The Dutchman was in third position and attacked Vergne for P2. Evans continued to fall back and moved out of the podium positions.

When Frijns' attack mode was over, Evans picked the Dutchman back up. All this while the race management announces that an additional four and a half minutes would be driven by the safety car. Evans cleverly saved his attack mode until the end, allowing him to pass Vergne after Frijns.

Vandoorne has everything under control in the final minutes of the race and is on his way to his first victory of 2022. With the win, the Belgian also takes over the lead of the championship. Evans and Vergne finish in second and third positions, Frijns finishes on P4 just outside the podium.
