Alfa Romeo team boss Frédéric Vasseur is frustrated with the increase in the maximum weight of F1 cars in 2022. His team was the only one to have the weight directly under control. That the weight has now been increased gives his rivals an unfair advantage.

Due to the new regulations in F1, the cars have become somewhat larger in size. Therefore, the maximum allowed weight of the cars also went from 792 kg to 795 kg. All the teams, except Alfa Romeo, could not manage to produce a car that complied with these regulations during the winter break. After the winter tests, it was decided by the FIA that another 3 kg would be added to the maximum allowed weight. This brought most teams into the green, but still there were teams that didn't get the weight right.

Vasseur sees unfair advantage with teams like Red Bull

Alfa Romeo team boss sounds frustrated in conversation with Motorsport.com. His team had it together from the start and he now sees an unfair advantage with teams like Mercedes and Red Bull Racing who still don't seem to have their weight quite right. The team boss suspects his rival teams of playing games with the FIA. Because the "too heavy" teams have had their way, Vasseur's team has been indirectly punished. Vasseur is surprised by the other teams who pretend they didn't know. You can't be surprised by a rule like this, according to the team boss.

The unfair advantage that teams like Red Bull Racing get from this is that they actually had more room to think during the development of the car. Vasseur indicates that his team had to abandon certain ideas because the car would be too heavy. The boss concludes that it was a crystal clear agreement and that it was also crystal clear that the agreed weight was achievable.
