On May 8, the very first Miami Grand Prix will be on the calendar. Over the last few months, they have been working hard at Miami Gardens to turn a parking lot into a Formula One circuit, including beach bar and marina. The circuit is 95% complete exactly one year after the start of construction.

New Grand Prix in the United States

Miami is the first of two new Grands Prix in the United States that will debut on the calendar in 2022 and in 2023. Las Vegas is the next addition and will be on the calendar in 2023. It's just under a month before Formula 1 cars race around Hard Rock Stadium and the track is almost ready.

The permanent buildings, such as the pit building, garages and race control tower are just about finished and the focus in the last few weeks has been on temporary structures, such as painting the kerbstones. "We have tried to create a track that drivers love to race on and a campus that offers unique, best-in-class fan experiences," said Richard Cregan, CEO of the Miami GP, on the Grand Prix website.

Miami GP design optimized

The Miami International Autodrome will have a length of 5.4 kilometers and drivers will go full throttle for about 58% of the lap. In total, the track has nineteen corners and there will be three DRS zones to encourage overtaking.

Cregan is proud of everyone who helped build the track. "There has been no compromise on any aspect of the circuit design or quality of construction," he says. "In my experience of working with new venues over the years, I’ve never seen as much effort on perfecting the surface of the track as we have done in Miami."
