Carlos Sainz crashed out at the Australian Grand Prix after crashing into the gravel. It was a disappointing result that also saw the Spaniard's unique run come to an end.

Bales in Australia

Sainz started the 2022 Formula 1 season nicely with two podiums. Although the Spaniard was slower than his teammate in qualifying and the race, he did not lose much ground in points. In Melbourne, however, it went all wrong for Sainz, who after an unsuccessful qualifying session did not even finish the race on Sunday.

On Saturday, things were already not going well for Sainz. First of all, his first fast lap in Q3 was deleted by the red flag that fell just before he crossed the finish line and due to a problem in the garage, he went out too late for his second run. He got no further than P9 and in the race, the choice to start on the hard tire proved not to be the right one.

Series at an end for Sainz

Yet it was the Ferrari driver himself who ended his race, driving just a little too aggressively in the early stages of the race where his tires were not yet working properly and he was being passed on all sides. He went through the grass too wildly, ended up in the gravel and then couldn't get out.

Sainz lost valuable points in the title race as a result, but also saw a special series go up in smoke. Indeed, the 2020 Russian Grand Prix had been the last race where Sainz had not crossed the finish line. In the 31 races that followed, Sainz had continuously finished, with two eleventh-place finishes as his worst result. However, the DNF in Australia put an end to this impressive run.
