Red Bull talent quits F3 (temporarily) due to Crohn's disease

Johnny Edgar is taking a step back. The Red Bull-trained talent reveals that he is suffering from Crohn's disease and will therefore be replaced (temporarily) at the Trident team by Oliver Rasmussen.

Edgar is considered one of the great talents in Red Bull's training program. The 18-year-old Briton won the ADAC Formula 4 championship in 2020 and finished 18th in his first season in F3 for the Carlin team. In 2022, this earned him a move to the top Trident team, but due to his illness, the season start did not go as desired.

Edgar revealed on Instagram that he and his family have made a difficult decision by quitting F3 until he feels better. He says he feels physically unable to perform at the level required in Formula 3 and hopes to get back to health first with the right medical support. A return is therefore certainly not yet ruled out.

Replacement at Trident

Giacomo Ricci, Trident's team boss, balks at the fact that his pupil is incapacitated by illness that causes chronic inflammation of the entire digestive tract. He also states that Edgar has not been able to perform optimally since the beginning of the season due to this illness, which may explain the only thirteenth and eleventh places in the first race weekend.

Oliver Rasmussen is obviously very happy with his return to Formula 3. The 21-year-old Dane already drove twenty races in F3 for the HWA Racelab team in 2021 in which he did not score any points for the team. In 2020, Rasmussen still managed to win six races in the Formula Regional European Championship for the team of Prema. He finished third in that championship.
