Aston Martin wants to become more independent: 'Our own engines by 2026'

With new technical regulations for this season, not much is changing about the engine in F1 cars. Since 2014, the engine has remained the same, but major changes are planned for 2026. Red Bull Racing has already decided to go their own way and make their own engines, and that decision seems to have inspired other teams.

Indeed, Aston Martin is also keen on making its own engines and although they are still far from a final decision, the team is interested in exploring further what is possible. "I think going forward with our ambitions, we’re definitely investigating our power unit supply in the long-term," acknowledges technical director Andrew Green to Formula1.com.

"2026 is mooted as a new power unit regulation and I think, as a team, we’d love to be involved". At least the money won't be an issue. Not only do they have owner Lawrence Stroll who could fund the project, since this season Aramco has been Aston Martin's main sponsor and for that a lot of money has appeared on the table.

"We have Aramco now involved as a sponsor and I think conversations going forward in the next few years… we’ll see. For sure we’ll be looking at it in great detail and understanding whether there is a benefit to it in that direction," Green concludes.
