Tost doesn't want to go back to situation like with Sainz and Verstappen

Formula 1 is no longer a place where you can have success with two rookies, according to Franz Tost. Haas tried it in 2021, but according to the AlphaTauri team boss, it is far too risky.

Haas took the gamble in 2021 with Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher. Two rookies who could learn a year in the highest racing class, prior to the year in which the American racing stable hopes to perform again. Whether that gamble has worked out well we won't see until 2022, but at least Tost knows he doesn't want two more rookies in his car.

Experienced man at AlphaTauri

At AlphaTauri, the same situation has often arisen. As a training team of Red Bull, young talents come through every year and sometimes there are two talents at the same time. For example, Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen were paired as two rookies in the Austrian's team in 2015.

Tost states to Formel1.de now that with two rookies you no longer have a chance of success in F1. According to Tost, the midfield is too competitive for that and the differences are too small. Where two drivers can often be within a hundredths of each other, rookies sometimes even lose tenths. With two such drivers, according to Tost, you are directly behind. Tost is therefore happy with his current situation, in which he has Pierre Gasly as an experienced man in the team.
