Mark Webber was the perfect second driver at Red Bull for years. The Australian never became World Champion, because teammate Sebastian Vettel was faster four years in a row. Even after his racing career, Webber is still a welcome guest in the paddock.

Warning

Webber watched Formula 1 introduce sprint racing last season. In conversation with Formelaustria he hinted at not being on the benches with enthusiasm. Webber says it is still important that the fans can understand what they are watching and what Formula 1 wants to achieve with sprint racing. After all, it's all about the Grand Prix on Sunday. "The sprint races must not make F1 a lottery or reduce the prestige of the class," he said.

Formula 1 has managed to attract a new, younger audience in recent years. With the new regulations, the class should become even more interesting for them and other fans. Webber too has been thinking about how best to do that. First of all, he would be in favor of reintroducing refueling during the race.

The top drivers

Above all, the best drivers should drive in Formula 1, Webber believes. "People want to see the best of the best. Sport needs key players like Lando Norris , George Russell , Max Verstappen , Charles Leclerc and even the old Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso . That's so important to motorsport."
