Colombian GP in the future? 'As a team we can make dreams come true'

Colombia seems keen to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the future. It would be the first time that Colombia would appear on the calendar. It concerns a semi-street circuit in the city of Barranquilla.

Ivan Duque, the President of Colombia, has revealed that there is a proposal to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the future in the city of Barranquilla, the fourth largest city in the South American country. The idea for the Grand Prix of Colombia comes from Jaime Pumarejo, the mayor of the city of millions.

"Dreams ... as a team we are able to make them come true," said President Duque according to the Colombian news site El Tiempo. The president reveals that, in the meantime, contact has already been made with Formula 1. Duque says the project has been under consideration for some time and can even reveal that it would be a semi-street circuit. "Given that this is a sporting proposal, the mayor has our support," the president concludes.

Expansion of the F1 calendar

In recent years, the Formula 1 calendar has expanded considerably. In 2022, 23 Grands Prix are planned, an absolute record for F1. More and more countries and cities want to host a race. This season F1 will run for the first time in Miami and from 2023 Qatar will get a permanent place on the calendar. Whether Colombia will actually be on the calendar remains to be seen.
