Oscar Piastri put in a great performance in 2021 by immediately winning the championship in his first season in Formula 2. The road to Formula 1 seemed open to him, but nothing was further from the truth.

As several teams in Formula 1 changed drivers, his name came up several times in the second half of last year. In the end, the talented driver ended up missing out on a place in the pinnacle of motorsport.

Piastri happy with new role

In 2022, Piastri will come out for Alpine where he will take on the role of reserve driver. Although he is disappointed that he will not get a chance in Formula 1 like Guanyu Zhou, who made the switch to Alfa Romeo, he indicated in an interview with The West that he also sees the positive sides of the upcoming season. This way he gets the chance to get used to his new world.

"There's a lot of aspects that I can learn from this year such as the hectic schedule of an F1 season, all the travel, getting used to jetlag and stuff," Piastri explained. "Doing that without having to go out and perform, in some ways, is actually quite nice to have that luxury. Of course I would've loved to be driving but there's still a lot I can take from this year."
