Alfa Romeo starts the season with Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou as their drivers. The racing stable also had the option of seating other drivers, but according to Frederic Vasseur this would have been irresponsible.

It took Alfa Romeo a long time to make the decision for next year. While Kimi Räikkönen announced his departure from Formula 1 in September, the team kept Antonio Giovinazzi in limbo for a long time. Finally, Alfa Romeo came out with the news that it was parting ways with Giovinazzi and opting for the talent of Zhou.

Vasseur wanted to make responsible decision

Immediately criticism came from outside, as Alfa Romeo had the option of several other talented drivers. For example, Theo Pourchaire seemed to be a good candidate. The young driver made an excellent impression in Formula 2 last season and is seen as a future star. Vasseur, however, did not think it was the right choice for him, he told the official website of Formula 1 .

"He won this season in Monaco," noted the team boss. "But the car is so complex and we have just six test days before the season – it means that it would have been, from my point of view, too risky, too challenging to do the step now. It's much better to be focused on the championship in F2."
