Formula 1 might get a new engine supplier in the coming years. The Volkswagen Group is showing interest in entering the sport and according to F1-CEO Stefano Domenicali it's all about the final step.

Volkswagen Group almost in F1

The new engines expected in 2026 will remain the same in terms of horsepower, but more power will come from the engine's hybrid system. This has to go from 120 kW to 350 kW. Also, Formula 1 wants to work with sustainable fuel. These are all conditions set by the Volkswagen Group to join Formula 1.

Details surrounding the deal with Volkswagen Group will be revealed in January 2022. In conversation with F1-insider.com Domenicali speaks of an important month when it comes to the decision of the Volkswagen Group. "It would be great to start, but I can't speak for VW. I've been part of this incredible group for a few years and I know how hard they are working for the future."

Domenicali himself once set up a feasibility study for Audi. At the time, he was president and managing director of subsidiary Lamborghini. Since 2020, the Italian has been F1 CEO and hopes to bring more manufacturers to Formula One.
