In 2022, Formula 1 will make the switch from 13-inch tyres to 18-inch tyres. The cars themselves will also undergo a major overhaul. Because of the changes Pirelli boss Mario Isola expects that in 2022 there will be mostly one-stop races.

Fewer pit stops in 2022

2022 is a year full of uncertainties in Formula 1. The new regulations could lead to many changes on the grid. Isola thinks that the performance of the tyres themselves will remain the same despite the change in size, but the cars will also change drastically and that could mean a small change according to Isola.

"I'm expecting most of the races will be one-stop, simply because if you have less degradation and tires with the characteristics I have mentioned, there is no reason to have more than one stop," Isola explained in Tire Technology International. Isola reckons that as well as less action in the pits, there will be a lot more action on the track.

Strategy less important

This does mean that strategy during the races will be a lot less important. In the 2021 season, a driver could still take advantage by stopping twice. With fresher tyres, the driver could then make up a lot of time, but if we are to believe Isola, we won't see that often in 2022.
