The season is over and that means we can look back on a brilliant campaign. Jolyon Palmer has been doing just that on the official website of Formula 1 and chooses the best driver and the best team of the season, but also the most remarkable moments of 2021.

Verstappen the best driver of the season

"Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were in a class of their own this season," Palmer said on The official website of Formula 1. The two drivers were evenly matched throughout the season, but if Palmer had to choose the best driver of the season he'd go for Verstappen. The Dutchman has made almost no mistakes this season according to Palmer. "Were it not for bad luck in Baku and Budapest and a collision at Silverstone, he would have clinched the championship before the final round at Yas Marina."

Palmer also singled out Mick Schumacher for praise as the best rookie on the grid. "Mick did well in a terribly underdeveloped Haas and beat his teammate - that was the best he could do." Meanwhile Palmer selected Mercedes as the best team after they clinched their eighth Constructors' Championship.

Silverstone first lap the moment of the year

A more difficult choice is that of the moment of the year, but the former Formula One driver ultimately went for that thrilling opening lap of the British Grand Prix. For corners, Verstappen and Hamilton battled for the lead in the race, until things went wrong at Copse and Verstappen crashed hard. "Ultimately, this was a moment that summed up the 2021 season, reinvigorated the title race and raised tensions between everyone at Mercedes and Red Bull."

The website also featured Palmer's other picks, including best qualifying lap, best individual performance, best underdog, best feel-good moment and THE race of the season.
