In the shadow of Max Verstappen 's Formula 1 world title and perhaps Nyck de Vries' championship in Formula E, another Dutchman was competing at a high level in an appealing class. Bent Viscaal took two podium finishes in Formula 2, at Monza and in Saudi Arabia.

Enjoy

The Tukker's season also ended last week in Abu Dhabi. There Viscaal also saw how Max Verstappen won the Formula 1 world title. "I think I experienced this the same as every Dutchman," says Viscaal in conversation with GPblog. "That everyone thinks it's great. It's just sports history, you have to enjoy that."

The race ended, as is well known, with a lot of controversy. In the end Lewis Hamilton lost a seemingly certain title to Verstappen at the very last moment. "I think so," Viscaal responds when asked if Verstappen is the deserved champion? "I also think that in the race everything went through the rules. I suspect we will have to wait a very long time for another championship to be decided in the last round of the last race. "

French German

Meanwhile, Viscaal is back home in Albergen. Looking back, he enjoyed all the festivities and the atmosphere in the Emirates. "I did think it was fantastic. The support classes (including Formula 2) were under the Max Verstappen grandstand, before turn nine. All teams were, I think, after a whole weekend of Dutch DJ's and carnival music, quite fed up with the Dutch. It was quite funny actually. You're in an Italian team, with all kinds of nationalities and a song of French German comes along. All this for a whole weekend. Yes, I really enjoyed it. It was a piece of history for Dutch sport, of course.

In a more extensive interview on GPblog - to be published soon - Viscaal discusses his own racing future. He was also asked whether Verstappen is an inspiration to him? "I think we have slightly too little age difference for that," says Viscaal. "When I started watching Formula 1, I really watched Jenson Button or Vettel. Actually, I'm (seeing Max as his inspiration) just a little too old for that."
