Verstappen on Mercedes' protest: 'Typical for this season'

Max Verstappen has won his first world title and, after winning it, spoke about Mercedes' protest, but also the fact that the title might as well have gone to Lewis Hamilton.

Bad luck for Hamilton

After a crazy finish in Abu Dhabi, Verstappen can now call himself Formula 1 world champion for the first time. The Dutchman has been described as a future world champion for years, but once you are in that position, you have to finish it off. Verstappen is not too bothered by the fact that Mercedes are now lodging a protest.

''It's typical that this happens when you look at this whole season. It is what it is. We are still very happy and enjoying it. As a team, we haven't done anything wrong. We raced when there was a green flag or green light and went for it on the track. So we're just enjoying it,'' Verstappen told GPblog and others in a press conference.

Constructors' title for Mercedes

The intention to protest seems to have ebbed away at Mercedes. Toto Wolff already congratulated Christian Horner and Max Verstappen with their title and the FIA came out with the news on Wednesday evening that there will be an investigation into the Grand Prix. The sport must improve in the future, but will not change the past.

So good news for Verstappen, who also realises that the championship could have gone differently. ''The drivers' championship could have gone either way. Lewis and I have had a great season. We pushed each other to the limit. I think it's fair that they have the constructors' title, because overall they were the fastest team. There is no regret with us. We did everything we could, but that's why I think it's a fair result'', concludes the Red Bull driver.
