DTM boss Gerhard Berger watched the battle for the world title in Abu Dhabi come to a thrilling conclusion on TV. He has never experienced a season like this in his career, the former Formula 1 driver says in the programme Sport & Talk Aus Dem Hangar 7 on ServusTV.

Final showdown between Hamilton and Verstappen

Berger is very enthusiastic about the 2021 Formula 1 season. The Austrian, who competed in Formula 1 himself from 1984 to 1997, believes that Formula 1 really needed such a season. "I have rarely seen two such tough racers," he refers to the fierce battle for the title between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

According to Berger, the reliability of today's cars also adds to the excitement. In the days of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, when Berger was also active in Formula 1, there were a lot more crashes. Now, every race is a fierce battle for victory.

Many more championships for Verstappen

Berger thinks the title for Verstappen is fully deserved, but also sees that the little bit of luck in Abu Dhabi was the deciding factor. Nevertheless, the Austrian also thinks that it will not stop here for the Red Bull driver. "Max will become world champion many more times."

After the race, emotions shot in all directions. From the anger and protests of Mercedes and the joy and emotion of Verstappen and Red Bull, to the images of the partying team members of Red Bull Racing and Mercedes. Berger thinks it's all wonderful to see. "In sport there's always a winner and a loser and when it's so close it's difficult. I can understand those emotions."
