Wolff on penalties: 'Hope everyone learns from it and adapts'

During the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, there were several incidents between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, some of which were very similar to the incident in Brazil. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff hopes the same will not happen during the decisive race in Abu Dhabi next weekend.

Even before Verstappen's penalty was announced last night, Wolff let it be known that he hopes everyone learns from the consequences and adjusts for the final race of the season.

"I hope the race in Jeddah had enough repercussions that everyone is going to learn from it and adapt for the final race in Abu Dhabi. I think that similar driving if it were to be deemed by the stewards as over the line, would then probably also be penalised in Abu Dhabi", he is quoted on Motorsport.com.

'We don't want to see that in Abu Dhabi'

"That could well end in a messy situation for everybody. I don't think that the championship has deserved a result that was influenced by a collision. I very much, in that case, trust into the self-regulating system," the team boss continues.

Wolff compares last weekend's incidents with Brazil. There he already warned that the FIA's decisions could make it unclear what the definition of fair racing and defending is.

"You know I said that in Brazil, that we're setting a precedent if it's not being investigated, that could end up really ugly for the championship. You've seen incidents today that were pretty much Brazil at slower speeds. And we don't want to have that in Abu Dhabi. The quicker car with the quicker driver should win the championship, and not by taking each other off."
