Villeneuve hails Ricciardo's decision

The outspoken Jacques Villeneuve always has his say on everything F1-related and this time it's no different...

Jacques Villeneuve believes Daniel Ricciardo made the correct decision when it was announced last week that he would be joining Renault from Red Bull at the end of the season.

It was an announcement that shook the Formula One world, with practically everyone expecting the Aussie to sign a new contract extension with Red Bull.

Many have questionned Ricciardo for his decision, but not former world champion Villeneuve - he claims he knew something was going on regarding Ricciardo.

"I've talked about this for a month and no-one believed me," the Canadian told Journal de Montreal.

"Everyone thought he'd stay with Red Bull but it's great that he's going to Renault which is a factory team with great resources.

"Next year, Red Bull will be partnered with Honda in 2019, which is not really reassuring. In addition, Red Bull is also focusing everything on Max Verstappen."

The line-up for next season still hasn't been confirmed by Red Bull, but boss Christian Horner says that he'd rather promote a junior driver.

Villeneuve thinks that the energy drink brand will do just that.

"Who will succeed him at Red Bull? I think (Carlos) Sainz and (Pierre) Gasly are in the best position to replace Ricciardo," Villeneuve added.
